For the more serious types, a person would likely be administered prescription medication in conjunction with therapy. In fact, for forms such as bipolar and Major Depressive Disorder in which suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts are common, treatment often involves hospitalization.
On the other hand, when an individual lives with mild to moderate depression there are a number of less severe treatment options. For instance, people benefit well with self-help, through the use of supplements, and even positive lifestyle changes. However, no person with depression should make the determination as to the right treatment. This is something that would need to come from a doctor who specializes in treating this particular disorder.
It is true that having good support is one of the key elements to being successful when battling depression. However, there are good types of support and those that an individual should avoid. In most cases, support from family and friends would prove highly beneficial but when a person is deeply depressed, this type of support would likely be turned away. In fact, when an individual is dealing with severe depression, support offered from close family members and friends can cause symptoms to intensify.
In saying this, there are other options for support that would help. Again, only after seeing a medical professional could it be determine which type of support would work best based on the individual but also the type of depression involved. Some people find organized support groups to be most helpful while others prefer to start off by getting support through online forums, chat rooms, or discussion boards. Although difficult for the person with mental depression, support is critical in getting this illness under control and reducing or preventing future episodes.
